The Lincoln State Park amphitheatre was dedicated in 1987 and served as the home of the 'Young Abe Lincoln' musical outdoor drama for 19 years. 'Young Abe Lincoln' was a vision begun by the Lincoln Club of Southern Indiana and the Lincoln Boyhood Drama Association which operated the theatre during its inaugural season. 'Young Abe Lincoln' was also produced briefly by Holiday World and then by the University of Southern Indiana for more than ten years. 'Young Abe Lincoln' was presented for the final time in August 2005 after the state legislature cut funding for the production. A series of concerts were presented at the amphitheatre by a private production company during 2006 and 2007.
Local efforts to restore funding were finally successful in 2007 when the Indiana General Assembly approved $1.6 million for upgrades to the amphitheatre and for production of a new Abraham Lincoln play.
A new board of directors was named for the Lincoln Boyhood Drama Association, Inc. in 2007 and in June 2008, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources signed a contract with the LBDA to produce a new Lincoln play and to receive the appropriated funding. On June 12, 2009, the new production of LINCOLN, written by Ken Jones, premiered for the first time at the Lincoln Amphitheatre. The new play uses multimedia images, lighting effects, and a Broadway-quality computer controlled set to bring to life the script written by playwright Ken Jones and staged by artistic director Scott Lank. The premiere of the new production coincides with the national and statewide celebration of the Lincoln Bicentennial.
